Ewenity Dairy Co-Operative's Beliefs and Goals
The five founder members all believe the viability and the sustainability of the family farm is the backbone of rural communities. We also have a strong commitment to the maintenance of a sound environment. and are determined that our impact on it is either positive or neutral. Furthermore, we believe that as we make our living from our sheep, they should have our respect. This means that they should be able to enjoy life, indulging in natural behaviours.
The Five Freedoms as practised in the UK pinpoint the areas which require attention from the aspect of animal welfare. If these five criteria are followed, our animals are well cared for.
They are as follows:
- Freedom from hunger and thirst.
- Freedom from fear and disease.
- Freedom from discomfort.
- Freedom from pain and injury.
- Freedom to express natural normal behaviour.
By providing our animals with the five freedoms, the need for medication is rare, as they tend to be more healthy. We are committed to production of wholesome natural milk from happy healthy ewes, free from additives. We pride ourselves in the short list of ingredients in our products; mainly milk and bacterial culture.
By acting in accordance with the above mentioned principles and by maintaining high standards of hygiene, we are able to produce high quality products. Our family farms are in a position to provide, you, the consumer, with gourmet dairy products on par with any European import, yet produced here, in Ontario, to our high food safety standards. In addition, many people, unable to consume dairy products, experience no difficulties with sheep millk products.
We are in the sheep milking business to provide products which are difficult to obtain for those searching for something special in the cheese world or those intolerant to cow milk.
As a final point, the provision of these specialist dairy products and artisanal cheeses gives the members of the Co-op a fair return on their milk.
